On stage with MK Ultra

An accomplished musician, band leader, and drum instructor, Matt Torrey has been making music from coast to coast for over 25 years. His influences range from the folk, classic and prog rock groups of the 70's to the great post-bebop era jazz bands of the 50's, and he has performed, recorded and toured with some of today's most talented songwriters.

Born in New Jersey and raised in Connecticut, Torrey began playing musical instruments at the age of 8. In 1994, he graduated from the University of North Texas, where he studied jazz and classical music with a concentration in percussion. After relocating to the San Francisco Bay area, he began a five year stint as the drummer in the band MK Ultra, fronted by John Vanderslice. During his stay in California, Torrey also played drums with Matt Nathanson, ex-Mommyhead Adam Elk, Virgil Shaw from the band Dieselhead, Tarnation's Paula Frazer, Go Kart Go, Chris von Sneidern and many others. At the start of the new millenium, Torrey moved to Brooklyn, NY, where he played drums for singer-songwriter Luke Temple, and later toured with the band Jets To Brazil. He also played drums in Jo

Matt now lives in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, where he owns and runs Matt Torrey's, a neighborhood bar and live music venue. When he is not on tour, Matt performs regularly in and around Manhattan, teaches drumming, and is a dedicated student of Master Drummer, Sam Ulano. Torrey is currently subbing on the off-broadway hit, Altar Boyz.
